Wofford 5, Presbyterian 2

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford Terriers men's tennis team captured its first victory of the season on Wednesday afternoon when they defeated Presbyterian College by a score of 5-2. With the victory, Wofford improves to 1-2 on the season while Presbyterian falls to 0-4 on the season.

The Terriers jumped out to an early lead in the match capturing the doubles point by a score of 2-1. The Terriers were led by juniors Alan Donald and Paul Bartholomy who defeated Mathew Martin and Ivan Ho of Presbyterian 8-3 at number one doubles.  Tinus Van Wyk and Drew Superstein teamed up to secure the doubles point by defeating Edward Snead and Ryan Walters 8-3 at number three doubles.  The Blue Hose achieved a victory at number two doubles where Andrew Brigham and Zachary Sprouse defeated Stuart Robertson and Tom Wood of Wofford 8-7.

In singles competition Paul Bartholomy continued his stellar play to achieve a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Zachary Sprouse at number four singles. The win gave the Terriers a 2-0 advantage.

After Presbyterian gained a point at number two singles, the Terriers came back with three victories to secure the match.  Michael Schecter defeated Edward Sneed 6-2, 6-0 at number six singles. Drew Superstein defeated Ryan Walters 6-2, 6-4 at number five singles and Alan Donald defeated Ivan Ho 6-4, 6-4 at number three singles.

The Blue Hose won the last match of the day at number one singles.  Matthew Martin defeated Tinus Van Wyk in a hard fought three set match.  Van Wyk won the first set 7-6 and Martin claimed the second set 7-6. Due to diminishing light conditions the final set was decided over a ten point tie breaker. Martin won the tie breaker by a score of 10-3.

Wofford will return to action on Saturday February 6th when they will have two matches.  The first match will be against Brevard College at 11:00 am the second match will feature North Greenville at 3:00 pm both matches will be played at the Reeves Tennis Center on the Wofford College campus.


Davidson 6, Gardner-Webb 1

DAVIDSON, N.C.
- The Davidson men¹s tennis team started out February the way it ended January, with another win, their fourth in a row as the Wildcats rolled to a 6-1 decision over visiting Gardner-Webb on Wednesday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center.

Davidson remained unbeaten at home, improving to 4-0, while it saw its overall record go to 4-1. Gardner-Webb fell to 0-3 on the season.

The freshmen tandem of Joe Schafer and Chris Mark continued to impress in the early stages of their first year, remaining undefeated in singles play as the duo led the Wildcats to wins in five of the six singles matches.

Schafer tallied a 6-1, 6-2 decision oer Andrew Veeder at No. 2 singles, his second win at the position and fourth victory overall. The freshman just nearly missed going perfect on the day, falling with doubles partner Eric Noble, 9-7, at No. 1.

Mark started off the day by helping seal the doubles point when he and partner Sam Burns scored a 9-7 win at No. 3 to improve to 4-1 as a team. The freshman then ran his singles record to a perfect 5-0 with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles over Rafael Altmayer.

The duo of Calum Gee and Walker Lyons also had a strong afternoon in both doubles and singles action. The duo ran their doubles mark to 4-0, all at the No. 2 spot, when they cruised to an 8-2 win over Jeremie Tardif.

The duo then each ran their singles records to 3-1 with wins at the No. 3 and 5 positions, respectively. Lyons won a tie breaker in his first set,7-6, before then shutting out his opponent, 6-0, in the next set to seal up the singles win.

Gee also won in straight sets, taking a 6-4, 6-3 match over Tardif at No. 5.

Scoring the final Wildcat point on the afternoon, and also tallying a perfect day, was Burns. The senior won his second straight match with a nice 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 position.

Davidson will take some time off before gearing up for its first Southern Conference match of the season, Feb. 13. The Wildcats will travel to Furman, currently ranked 59th in the latest ITA poll, for a 1 p.m. match.


Tennessee 6, The Citadel 1

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -
The Citadel tennis team fell, 6-1, to the Tennessee Vols on Wednesday Night at the Varsity Tennis Courts in Knoxville, Tenn.

Senior Alberto Diaz tallied the Bulldogs' lone point against Tennessee's Max Stevens in a tiebreaker. Diaz won the first set, 6-3, until the Vols' Stevens forced the third set when he won, 7-6. Diaz then clinched the point for the Bulldogs in the tiebreaker, 1-0.

In other singles action, Yufo Sutantio was defeated by Tennessee's Davey Sandgren, 6-3, 6-2, and the Vols' Edward Jones downed David Orces, 6-1, 6-2. In singles four, Josh Cook fell, 6-0, 6-3, to Tennessee's Taylor Patrick while Tripp Larkin lost, 6-1, 6-1, to the Vols' Matteo Fago. Tennessee's Bryan Swartz defeated Luis Morett, 6-3, 6-1, to close out singles competition.

In doubles one, the Vols' Jones and Stevens won, 8-2, against Orces and Sutantio while Diaz and Cook fell, 8-3, to Tennessee's Sandgren and Fago. In doubles three, Derek Dickey and Morett lost, 8-3. The Bulldogs are now 0-2 on the season. 

Coming up next, the Bulldogs will take a few days off before traveling to Clemson, S.C. to rally against Gardner-Webb on Feb. 20 at 11 a.m. and Clemson on Feb. 21 at 9 a.m.
