SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman women’s tennis player Danni Vines has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held April 18-24, the league office announced Wednesday.

The sophomore from Elizabethton, Tennessee, was named the 2018 SoCon Women’s Tennis Tournament MVP after leading the Paladins to their second consecutive championship on Sunday. Playing up at flight three, Vines went 3-0 without dropping a single set. On Friday, Vines topped UNCG’s Sophia Adams 6-4, 6-2 before dispatching Chattanooga’s Delaney Edwards 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday. In the championship round on Sunday, Vines remained dominant, defeating ETSU’s Andrea Pascual-Larringa 6-2, 6-3 to cap off her perfect singles action. Teaming up with Katty Weymouth, the duo went 2-0 at flight two doubles, having an additional match end unfinished.

Vines, who is a health sciences major with a 4.0 grade point average, was the recipient of the Pinnacle Award which is given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA from the championship team.

With the win, the Paladins earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships which begin May 11 on campus sites.
