SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU junior Ioanna Markesini has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played April 10-16. Markesini went 4-0 in all competition last week as the Bucs finished the regular season with a pair of wins. ETSU topped Western Kentucky, 4-1, and downed UNCG (4-3) on Saturday afternoon.
A native of Athens, Greece, Markesini cruised to a pair of straight-set wins at No. 2 singles last week. She downed WKU’s Monica Malinen, 6-2, 6-2, and topped UNCG’s Alice Taylor, 6-1, 6-1. Markesini is now 11-5 in singles play this spring and has won seven of her last nine contests.
Markesini teamed with Marina Guinart Espana at No. 1 doubles, and ETSU’s top pair held off WKU’s Lisa Friess and Andreanna Christopoulou, 6-3, and then finished the regular season with a 6-0 win over UNCG’s Taylor and Masey DeMoss. Markesini and Espana are now 12-4 together this spring, all at No. 1 doubles.
ETSU (12-5, 6-1 SoCon) earned the No. 2 seed in this week’s Southern Conference women’s tennis tournament and will take on No. 7 Wofford (11-12, 1-6 SoCon) in the quarterfinals.Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Furman’s Ansley Speaks, Mercer’s Katia Stavroulaki, UNCG’s Sophia Adams, Samford’s Ellie Gerlach, Western Carolina’s Madison Riley and Wofford’s Cassidy Hicks.
