• Mercer’s Lee Bennett, the SoCon’s defensive player of the week, also earned that award on the national level from STATS after helping the Bears knock off nationally ranked The Citadel on Saturday, 24-14.

• After opening the season 0-3 against a ranked Wofford team, an Elon team that is now in the top 20, and FBS NC State, which is now nationally ranked, Furman is rolling. Winners of three straight, the Paladins have outscored their last three opponents 142-66 and held Chattanooga to just seven yards rushing Saturday. Quarterback P.J. Blazejowski leads the FCS with 19.25 yards per completion and 11.30 yards per pass attempt.

• Western Carolina moved into the FCS Coaches Poll at No. 25 despite an overtime loss at No. 5 Wofford on Saturday, giving the league four teams ranked in both major polls. Wofford held steady at No. 5 in both the coaches poll and the STATS FCS Top 25, and Samford moved up to 18 and 19 in the polls, respectively. The Citadel dipped to No. 22/23, while the Catamounts rose one spot to 21st in the STATS rankings. Mercer and Furman are also receiving votes in the STATS poll.

• The Citadel will play its 500th Southern Conference game in program history when it hosts league-leading Wofford on Saturday. VMI reached that milestone on Sept. 30.

• At 5-0, Wofford is one of just seven remaining undefeated FCS teams this season.

• Saturday’s contest between VMI and Samford featured the first collegiate battle between quarterback brothers Duncan and Devlin Hodges. Duncan, a redshirt freshman for the Keydets, went 16-for-31 for 121 yards and three interceptions, while Devlin, a redshirt junior for the Bulldogs, was 26-for-38 for 262 yards and a touchdown.

• With his performance, Devlin Hodges became Samford’s career leader in passing yards with 8,204, breaking the old record of 7,950, set by Ray Nelson from 2001 to 2004. Hodges, a redshirt junior, also moved into third in league history in yards passing.

• Senior running back Detrez Newsome returned to the lineup for Western Carolina on Saturday, rushing 13 times for 69 yards with one reception for a yard. Newsome did not drop back on kickoff returns, finishing with 70 all-purpose yards to snap his string of 18 consecutive games of at least 100 all-purpose yards. Also in that contest, redshirt senior wide receiver Terryon Robinson caught five passes to become the Catamounts’ career leader with 199 receptions. He needs three more to enter the SoCon’s top 10 in that category.

• ETSU recorded eight sacks and forced three turnovers in its 16-3 Homecoming win over Robert Morris on Saturday.

• Western Carolina quarterback Tyrie Adams and defensive back Marvin Tillman were named the SoCon’s September offensive and defensive athletes of the month for football, respectively.
