CHARLESTON, S.C. -- College of Charleston sophomore women’s tennis player Caroline Newman has been accepted into the school’s William Aiken Fellows Society.

Newman, who was also named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete team last year, posted a 4.0 grade point average in the school’s Honors College.

The William Aiken Fellows Society is a group of highly capable College of Charleston students who have the potential to successfully pursue national and international opportunities reserved for top scholars.

Throughout their college careers, William Aiken Fellows work closely with the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards and participate in numerous programs designed to create leadership opportunities, enrich their academic experience and prepare them for graduate work and beyond.

The William Aiken Fellow Society application includes:

• A list of leadership activities

• A list of service activities

• 2 essays: 1) personal statement, and 2) academic plans and leadership goals statement

• 2 letters of recommendation by College of Charleston faculty

Activities planned through the Society will prepare students to apply for nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships, graduate programs, and job opportunities. Aiken Fellows will participate in a monthly scholar series focused on current events, in professional development workshops, and special lectures. All will work with Dr. Trisha Folds-Bennett, Associate Dean of the Honors College, in one-on-one mentoring sessions focused on the development of opportunities and skills tailored to the student’s academic goals with particular focus on application for nationally competitive awards.

Newman posted a 19-6 record last season in singles play and helped Charleston to a 24-5 overall record and the Southern Conference championship.
