SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Alory Pereira has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played Feb. 20-26, the conference announced Tuesday.
Pereira finished the week 3-0 in the No. 2 singles spot, improving her overall record to 6-1 this season. The senior started the week with a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (11-9) win over NC State’s Adriana Reami, earning ETSU’s lone win against the 37th-ranked Wolfpack. Pereira followed that up with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win over Milana Lysova of Miami (Ohio) as the Bucs cruised to a 6-1 victory. Her third and final win of the week came against Elpida Malamou of Western Kentucky as Pereira earned a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory.
In doubles action, Pereira, along with Ioanna Markesini, went 2-1 with their lone loss coming against the 12th-ranked duo from NC State. The No. 1 doubles duo rebounded with a 6-4 win over Miami (Ohio) and then a tough 7-5 victory over Moka Ito and Monica Malinen from Western Kentucky.
ETSU returns to the court on March 3 for a SoCon match at in-state rival Chattanooga at 10 a.m. One day later, the Bucs travel to Jacksonville, Florida, for a Sunday afternoon contest at North Florida.
Also nominated: Carol Elizabeth Kerman (Furman), Corinne Blythe (UNCG) and Emma Van Hee (Chattanooga).
