SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU sophomore Loy Hee Ying has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from March 8-14. The selection is made by the league office.
Loy won the River Landing Classic at the par-72, 6,082-yard River Landing in Wallace, North Carolina, on March 9-10. The Bucs’ second-year player from Baru, Kulaijaya, Malaysia, fired a 3-under-par 213 to claim medalist honors at the tournament, which featured 11 teams and 74 players.
The tournament win was the first of Loy’s collegiate career after a pair of runner-up finishes already this academic year. In six tournaments in 2016-17, Loy has posted five top-10 finishes and four top-five results.
Loy was the wire-to-wire winner of the River Landing Classic, as she opened her tournament with a career-best 7-under 65 that included six birdies and an eagle. She followed that with a 1-over 73 in round two as the Bucs sat atop the team leaderboard after each of the first two rounds of competition.
Loy closed her tournament with a 3-over 75 but still had plenty of breathing room for her first collegiate title, as she finished five strokes clear of a pair of players tied for second. Loy was the only player in the field to finish under par and her first-round 65 was the low round of the tournament and the low round in the SoCon this season.
The weekly award is the second of Loy’s career. She also won the honor nearly a year ago to the day, on March 16, 2016.
ETSU returns to action this weekend at the Augusta Invitational in Augusta, Georgia.
Also nominated: Terese Romeo (Mercer), Haley Harrington (Samford), Monica San Juan (Chattanooga) and Ashley Thompson (Western Carolina).
