GAINESVILLE, FLA. -- The seventh-ranked Furman women's golf team tied for second Sunday at the SunTrust Women's Gator Invitational, held this weekend at the par 70, 6,002 yard Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
The Paladins placed three players in the top nine, including senior Reona Hirai (+2) who led Furman after tying for fifth. Hirai scored a 71 with three birdies on Sunday to finish the tournament nine strokes behind individual medalist Jiwon Jeon (-7) of Daytona State, who posted a 69 on Sunday for a three-round total of 203.
Junior Haylee Harford (+3) and senior Jacqueline Bendrick (+3) were one stroke back of Hirai in a tie for ninth. Harford paced the Paladins with a 69 and three birdies in the final round, while Bendrick fired a 71 with a birdie on No. 5 during Sunday's play.
Senior Alice Chen (+8) tied for 27th after carding a 72 with a birdie on No. 17 in the final round, and sophomore Natalie Srinivasan (+9) tied for 30th after scoring a 75 on Sunday. Sophomore Marra Burton, who played as an individual, tied for 63rd after recording a 77 in round three.
Host Florida (E) , which is ranked 12th nationally, won the tournament by 12 strokes over the Paladins (+12), who tied for second with Campbell (+12). Tennessee (+17) finished fourth, followed by Oregon (+27) in fifth, and Clemson (+28) in sixth.
The Paladins will compete at the Clemson Invitational March 23-25 in Sunset, S.C.
