BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB's Madison Millsaps hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Blazer softball team a 4-3 win in eight innings over Samford Tuesday night at Mary Bowers Field.
The teams entered the eighth inning tied at 3-3. UAB's Mary Warren singled to lead off the bottom of the inning. Katelyn Prater then pinch ran for Warren. Molli Garcia then reached base on a fielder's choice, with Prater advancing to second base on a Samford error. Millsaps then singled to left-center field to drive in Prater with the game-winning run for the 4-3 UAB win.
Samford was led in the game by Abby Sweeney, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double. Madison Couch went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Whitney Hinton hit a solo home run in a 1-for-4 performance. Jessica Stone (8-6) pitched 7.0 innings, giving up four runs, just three earned, on 12 hits to take the loss in the circle for Samford.
For UAB, Danii Fernandez went 4-for-4 with an RBI. Warren went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Destini England drove in two runs in a 1-for-4 performance. Cara Goodwin (4-11) pitched 3.2 innings, giving up two runs on one hit in picking up the win for UAB.
The Blazers jumped on top first, plating three runs in the bottom of the second inning. England drove in two runs with a single, and Fernandez drove in one run with a single as UAB took an early 3-0 lead.
Samford put its first run on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning, cutting the UAB lead to 3-1. Hinton led the inning off with a solo home run to bring Samford to within two runs.
The Bulldogs tied the score with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Couch singled to center field, advancing to second on a UAB error and driving in Lexi Higgins and Rebecca Leonard to knot the score at 3-3.
Neither team was able to score the rest of the way until UAB's game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
With the loss, Samford falls to 19-28 on the season. The Bulldogs are now 2-8 in extra-inning games and 5-12 in one-run contests. UAB improves to 16-27 with the win.
Samford will host Mercer in a Southern Conference series this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m., and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
