SPARTANBURG, S.C. Appalachian State third baseman Katie Boyd and UNC Greensboro pitcher Amber Harrell have been named this week’s Southern Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for all games from Feb. 9-15, the conference office announced Monday. The awards are voted on by the league’s softball sports information directors.

Boyd hit three home runs and batted .455 in the Mountaineers’ four games at the Florida State Sunshine Classic this past weekend in Tallahassee, Fla. In ASU’s 4-3 loss to Miami (OH) last Friday, the sophomore hit two home runs and drove in three runs. With her two home runs, Boyd became the first ASU player to have a pair of multi-home run games. Later in the weekend, the Walkertown, N.C., native went 2-for-3 with a home run in a 4-1 loss to nationally-ranked Purdue. Boyd now has 12 home runs in her Mountaineer career, good for third place in the ASU record books.

Harrell went 2-0 with a 0.54 ERA last weekend as the Spartans defeated Charlotte and Army at the Green and White Classic in Charlotte, N.C. The junior threw complete games in both contests and allowed only one earned run and five hits in 13 innings of work. In a 3-2 extra-inning win over Charlotte on Friday, the McDonough, Ga., native pitched all eight innings and struck out seven batters, while allowing three hits. In a 4-1 victory over Army on Saturday Harrell again struck out seven, while giving up one hit.

Also nominated for this week’s player of the week award were UNC Greensboro’s Leslie Furness, Chattanooga’s Toni Hutchison, Georgia Southern’s Robyne Siliga and College of Charleston’s Katie Nutaitis.

Also nominated for this week’s pitcher of the week award were Western Carolina’s Lauren Ross, College of Charleston’s Terri Mesko, Appalachian State’s Kayla Richardson and Georgia Southern’s Kristan Glover.
