Greenville, S.C. – Furman volleyball opened the home portion of the 2017 schedule with a sweep of Gardner-Webb (25-10, 25-18, 25-23) on Wednesday night inside Alley Gym. The win moves the Paladins to 5-5 on the year, while the loss drops the Runnin' Bulldogs to 6-6.
Jamila Johnson led the Paladins in kills with 14, while Courtney Hoffman added nine kills on 11 swings with just one error for a .727 hitting percentage. Hunter Thompson dished out 26 assists and added a match-high 11 digs for the only double-double of the match. The Paladins held the Runnin' Bulldogs to a .054 hitting percentage.
Gardner-Webb jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, but the Paladins rallied to take a 9-6 lead and force GWU to take their first timeout. Furman ended the set on a 12-1 run to take it, 25-10, for a 1-0 match lead. The teams traded points in the second set until Hunter Thompson served the Paladins on an 8-0 run to propel Furman to a 25-18 set two victory.
The teams traded points for the majority of the third set, until the Paladins opened a 21-18 lead. Gardner-Webb stormed back to tie the set at 22, but Furman used kills by Thompson and Johnson and a Gardner-Webb attack error to take the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-0.
Furman is back in action this weekend, closing out nonconference play at the Rocky Top Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn.
