SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford’s Catie Cronister and Furman’s Meg DeMaar have been named Southern Conference volleyball offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for matches played Oct. 3-8, the conference office announced Monday. This is the second weekly award this year for both Cronister and DeMaar.
Cronister, an outside hitter, helped Wofford go 3-0 this past week as the Terriers improved to 14-6 in 2017. Cronister recorded 76 kills in 14 sets during the week, averaging 5.43 kills pet set, and tallied 20-plus kills in all three contests. The sophomore started the week with her fifth double-double of the season, recording 22 kills and 16 digs as the Terriers downed nonconference foe Presbyterian. Cronister hit .333 in the match and added an assist and block. In the five-set win over UNCG, Cronister led all players in kills as she notched a career-high 30. Cronister also added 20 digs and tallied two aces. The win over UNCG on Friday snapped the Spartans’ 18-match win streak in the series. The Chicago, Illinois, native wrapped up the weekend with 24 kills, four aces and 15 digs against Western Carolina, marking her seventh double-double this season. Cronister has seven matches with 20-plus kills this season and ranks second in the NCAA in total aces (44) and third in aces per set (0.61). Cronister also leads the conference in kills per set (4.58) and service aces (0.61).
DeMaar, a libero, finished the week with 61 digs and 26 assists as the Paladins earned three victories and improved to 6-0 in conference play as she turned in double-digit digs in all three matches and 20-plus digs in both weekend contests. In the Paladins’ 3-1 midweek win at The Citadel, DeMaar recorded 14 digs, 11 assists and four service aces. The 11 assists against the Bulldogs were one shy of a career high. The Glen Ellyn, Illinois, native then posted 22 digs and eight assists in a win over Western Carolina. DeMaar rounded out the weekend with a match-high 25 digs against UNCG, finishing just four digs shy of her season high. A captain for the Paladins, DeMaar finished the week averaging 5.08 digs per set and 2.17 assist per set. The senior ranks second in the conference with 4.56 digs per set and has helped the Paladins push their win streak to six games, with their last loss coming on Sept. 16.
