SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Leah Clayton and Furman’s Meg DeMaar have been named the Southern Conference offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for matches played Oct. 29 – Nov. 4, the conference office announced Monday.
Clayton, an outside hitter, hit .277 and averaged 4.6 kills and 4.1 digs per set as the Bucs picked up three conference wins to clinch the SoCon regular season title. In a home, mid-week contest against UNCG, Clayton tallied 12 kills and 16 digs, earning her 12th double-double of the season in the sweep of the Spartans. At Furman, she hit .395 with 19 kills and a career-high 21 digs to pick up another double-double as the Bucs won 3-1, their first win in Alley Gym since 2006. A day later at Wofford, the native of Danville, Virginia, notched a match-high 15 kills and added four digs in the sweep. Clayton leads the conference in kills (417) and kills per set (3.93).
The Bucs sit at 24-5 overall and 13-1 in conference play heading into the final weekend of the regular season. After a non-conference loss to High Point on Oct. 9, ETSU has won eight in a row and hasn’t dropped a conference match since the lone loss on Sept. 28. The Bucs have14 sweeps on the year. ETSU hosts The Citadel on Nov. 9 and Mercer on Nov. 10.
DeMaar, a libero, averaged 6.62 digs per set as the Paladins split a pair of matches on the week. In the 3-1 loss to ETSU, DeMaar totaled 19 digs and nine assists, just shy of a double-double. A day later, the Glen Ellyn, Illinois, native tallied a season-high 34 digs and set the program record for digs in a four-set match. She added seven assists in the 3-1 win over the Western Carolina Catamounts and earned her 2,000th career dig, becoming the lone Paladin in program history to eclipse the mark. Amongst conference players, DeMaar is third in digs (484) and digs per set (5.09).
Furman (11-14, 7-7 SoCon), which sits in a three-way tie for third place, closes out the regular season by hosting Wofford on Wednesday, Nov. 7 and traveling to UNCG on Nov. 10.
