SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its volleyball players of the week Monday for games played Sept. 2-8. ETSU middle blocker Kaela Massey was named the Offensive Player of the Week, Wofford outside hitter Catie Cronister was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Samford’s Corinne Meglic was tabbed the Setter of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
Massey averaged 4.12 kills per set and hit .545 on the weekend as the Bucs swept Charleston Southern and South Carolina State before suffering their first loss of the season in a close five-setter against Coastal Carolina. Massey began play in the Coastal Carolina Classic, moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, due to the threat of Hurricane Dorian, with 14 kills, a match high, against Charleston Southern. She had just one error on 19 swings, hitting a career-best.684, and added four digs, one assist and one block in the sweep. Against Coastal Carolina on Sunday, Massey tallied a career-high 19 kills in the 3-2 setback. She hit .472 with six digs and four blocks and was named to the all-tournament team for her performance.
Cronister totaled 51 kills, 65 digs and 34 assists in four contests in the Duke Invitational as the senior was shuffled around the lineup. Against Duke to open tournament play, Cronister tallied 20 kills, 12 digs and 11 assists in just four sets to record the first known triple-double in program history. That afternoon, she led Wofford with 16 digs in the three-set loss. The senior from Chicago, Illinois, earned another triple-double in the first game on Saturday, notching 11 kills, 23 digs and 16 assists against UNCW. Cronister, a preseason all-conference selection, concluded play in Durham, North Carolina, by hitting .519 with 17 kills and 14 digs in a sweep of North Carolina Central.
Meglic, a redshirt sophomore, helped the Bulldogs to a 3-0 weekend as Samford hosted North Alabama, Jacksonville State and UAB in the Samford Invitational. The native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, totaled 125 assists in three contests, averaging 12.50 per set. Meglic kicked off the weekend with 41 assists, six digs and three aces as Samford swept North Alabama. She followed up that performance with 40 digs the next morning, helping Samford past Jacksonville State, 3-0. Meglic concluded the tournament with 44 assists, four digs and four blocks in the Bulldogs’ 3-1 win over crosstown rival UAB.
The weekly honor is the first for Meglic, while Cronister and Massey each collect their third. Cronister, who picks up the defensive award for the first time, earns her first honor since 2017 when she was a two-time offensive selection. Massey, who has also won the award on both the offensive and defensive side, was last named the Offensive Player of the Week in week 10 of 2018.
This weekend, ETSU plays in UAB’s Blazer Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama. Wofford hosts Presbyterian on Wednesday, Sept. 11, before welcoming North Carolina A&T, Alabama A&M and Gardner-Webb in the Wofford Invitational. Samford heads to Kennesaw, Georgia, to participate in the Kennesaw State Challenge.
