SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its volleyball players of the week Monday for games played Sept. 30-Oct. 6. Samford outside hitter Kelsi Hobbs was named the Offensive Player of the Week, Western Carolina’s Meagan Sanchez was named the Defensive Player of the Week and ETSU’s Emily Arnold was tabbed the Setter of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.

Hobbs repeats as player of the week and picks up her third offensive honor of the season. The native of Hoover, Alabama, helped Samford to a 3-0 midweek sweep at Mercer and a 4-0 mark in conference play. The senior right-side hitter tallied 15 kills, a match high, and had just two errors on 32 swings (.406).

Sanchez averaged 5.62 digs per set as Western Carolina went 2-0 in conference action, picking up a 3-2 win at Mercer and earning a sweep at Chattanooga. In the win over the Bears, the native of Bristow, Virginia, led the Catamounts and tied for the match high with 27 digs. She followed that up with a match-high 18 digs at Chattanooga. Sanchez is the first to win a weekly award four times in a season since Samford’s Erin Bognar in 2016 and becomes just the 10th player in league history to win five career weekly awards. Western Carolina has won eight matches in a row, the Catamounts’ longest winning streak since 2012, and join Samford and ETSU atop the conference at 4-0 in league play.

Arnold, a freshman, averaged an impressive 12.0 assists per set as the Bucs picked up two road conference wins, sweeping Chattanooga on Oct. 4 and Mercer a day later. The native of Louisville, Kentucky, dished out a match-high 38 assists and added 10 digs, earning a double-double, in the win over the Mocs. She led ETSU with 34 assists at Mercer as the Bucs moved to 4-0 in SoCon action.

After three straight road contests, Samford returns home to host Furman on Friday, Oct. 11, and UNCG on Saturday, Oct. 12. Western Carolina and ETSU each started off conference play with four consecutive road matches. The Catamounts welcome The Citadel on Friday and Wofford on Saturday, while ETSU hosts Wofford for its first home game of the season on Friday and greets The Citadel the next day.
