SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its volleyball players of the week Monday for games played Oct. 7-13. ETSU middle blocker Kaela Massey was named the Offensive Player of the Week, Western Carolina’s Meagan Sanchez was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Mercer’s Nya Steele was tabbed the Setter of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.

Massey picks up her second offensive honor of the season after helping ETSU to a 3-2 win over Wofford and a 3-1 win against The Citadel. The native of Brentwood, Tennessee, tallied 16 kills on 40 swings against Wofford, adding seven digs and nine blocks in the home win on Friday. A day later, the senior hit .478, finishing with 11 kills and no errors against The Citadel. She added five blocks and four digs as the Bucs improved to 6-0 in league play.

Sanchez averaged 6.0 digs per set as Western Carolina added another pair of conference wins, sweeping The Citadel on Friday and downing Wofford in four sets on Saturday to run its win streak to 10. In the win over The Citadel, the native of Bristow, Virginia, led all players with 20 digs. She followed up that performance with a match-high 22 against Wofford. Sanchez is the first player in conference history to win the defensive weekly award five times in a season and becomes just the eighth player in league history to win six career weekly awards.

Steele, a sophomore, averaged 14.67 assists per set as Mercer swept Chattanooga in its lone match of the week. Steele’s 44 assists were a match high and tied the second-most in her career. She also recorded a season-high four kills (.500) and had just one error on six attempts.

ETSU, one of three teams atop the conference at 6-0, plays at Western Carolina on Wednesday, Oct. 16, and at Samford on Friday, Oct. 18. The Catamounts and Bulldogs are also 6-0. After hosting ETSU, Western Carolina plays at Samford on Saturday, while Mercer plays at Furman on Friday and at UNC Greensboro on Saturday.
