SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Paige Alsten and Furman’s Meg DeMaar have been named offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for matches played Sept. 4-10, the conference office announced Monday.

Alsten, a middle blocker, recorded 50 kills in 13 sets over the weekend in the Ole Miss Classic. In Mercer’s opening match, Alsten tallied a career-high 21 kills and six block assists as the Bears downed Northwestern State 3-1. The junior finished with a .594 hitting percentage against the Demons. In the second game of the tournament, the Lighthouse Point, Florida, native posted 12 kills, six block assists and three digs. Alsten rounded out the tournament with 17 kills against SEC opponent Ole Miss and a season-high nine blocks as the Bears lost a close five-setter to the host Rebels. Following her strong performance in which she averaged 2.85 kills per set, 1.62 blocks per set and finished with a .394 hitting percentage, Alsten was named to the Ole Miss Classic All-Tournament team. Alsten currently leads the SoCon in hitting percentage (.414) and blocks (40.0) and ranks seventh in kills with 3.81 per set.

DeMaar, a senior libero, finished play at the Hampton Inn Bama Bash with 67 digs and 12 assists in 12 sets. DeMaar opened the weekend with 23 digs against Hofstra and followed with 24 digs in a win over Tennessee State. The Glen Ellyn, Kentucky, native rounded out the weekend with 20 digs against SEC foe Alabama. DeMaar finished the weekend averaging 5.58 digs per set and recorded 20-plus digs in all three matches of the tournament. DeMaar, who missed most of last season with a back injury, ranks second in the conference with 5.30 digs per set and 159 total.

Also nominated for defensive player of the week: Marija Popovic (ETSU), Christina Gregory (UNCG), Grace Tiesman (Samford), Megan Kaufman (Chattanooga), Meagan Sanchez (Western Carolina) and Taylor Gill (Wofford).
