SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford’s Catie Cronister and Taylor Gill have been named Southern Conference volleyball offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for matches played Nov. 6 to Nov. 12, the conference office announced Monday. This is the third weekly award of the season for Cronister and second for Gill after the duo helped the Terriers go 2-0 in the final week of regular-season play.
Cronister, an outside hitter, finished the week with 43 kills, 13 digs and five total blocks as Wofford improved to 20-10 and earned the fourth seed in the SoCon Volleyball Championship. In the first game of the weekend at Chattanooga, Cronister recorded 24 kills on 49 attempts, giving her a .347 attack percentage for the match. The sophomore finished just one dig shy of recording her fifth consecutive double-double and 12th of the year and added an ace to give her a conference-best 55 this year. On Saturday, Cronister tallied 19 kills, four digs and three block assists in a pivotal three-set win over ETSU. The Chicago, Illinois, native led the team in kills in both games and finishes the regular season having recorded double-digit kills in 27 of Wofford’s 30 total matches and 20-plus kills in 11 matches. Cronister finished the weekend averaging 6.14 kills per set and 1.86 digs per set and is Wofford’s new leader for kills in a single season with 505 total. Cronister leads the SoCon in kills per game (4.55) and service aces (0.55).
Gill, a libero, racked up 51 digs in seven total sets over the weekend. On Friday at Chattanooga, Gill recorded 21 digs to pass the 500-dig mark this season. The 21 digs were a team high and second-most in the match as she also finished with an ace and three assists. In the sweep over ETSU, Gill tallied a match-best 30 digs, 19 more than anyone else in the match, and set a Wofford program record for most digs in a three-set match. Gill’s 30 digs are also the most in a three-set match in the SoCon this season. The junior previously tied the record earlier in the year with 27 digs on Sept. 8 against Florida Gulf Coast. The Madison, Alabama, native finished the weekend averaging 7.29 digs per set and chipped in five assists. Gill ranks third in the conference with an average of 4.77 digs per set and fifth with 0.29 service aces per set.
The 34th edition of the SoCon volleyball tournament gets underway on Friday, Nov. 17, at 9:30 a.m. and will feature all nine teams on the campus of Western Carolina. For more information, click here.
