SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Alyssa Kvarta and Samford’s Grace Tiesman have been named the Southern Conference offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for matches played Sept. 3-Sept. 9, the conference office announced Monday.
Kvarta, a setter, averaged 10.56 assists per set and paced the offensive attack as the Bucs went 3-1 on the week with wins over Tennessee, Coastal Carolina and Duke. In the five-set win over Tennessee in a mid-week contest, the senior tallied a double-double with 47 assists and a career-high 21 digs. With ETSU trailing 7-0 in the decisive fifth set, Kvarta served the Bucs to nine straight points to shift momentum and give ETSU the lead. In the 3-1 win over Coastal Carolina, she dished out a season high 50 assists and added 12 digs for another double-double performance. In the five-set loss to Cincinnati, ETSU’s only loss of the weekend, she had 48 assists, eight digs and six kills. At Duke, the Crown Point, Indiana native totaled 45 assists in the 3-1 win, giving her 45-plus assists in all four matches on the week. In the win over the host Blue Devils also added 10 digs and earned her fifth double-double of the young season and her third in four matches. For her performance, Kvarta was named to the Duke Invitational All-Tournament team, her third straight all-tournament team recognition of the season. She leads all SoCon players with 10.41 assists per set
Tiesman, a libero, tallied 69 digs as Samford went 2-1 in the Bobcat Classic hosted by Ohio University. The junior totaled a team-high 28 digs and added four assists and two service aces in the five-set loss to Ohio. In the 3-2 win over IUPUI, the Wheaton, Illinois native totaled a match-high 29 digs with five assists and another pair of aces. She had 12 digs, again a match-high, in the three-set win over Virginia Tech to conclude the weekend for the Bulldogs.
The conference honor is the first for both Kvarta and Tiesman.
