SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford forward Taylor Yount and Western Carolina goalkeeper Melody Mezzina have been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition Sept. 10-16.

Samford went 1-0-1 on the week after downing Alabama State 5-0 on Sept. 13 and playing to a 3-3 tie at Auburn two days later. In the win over the Hornets, Yount recorded a hat trick, scoring on each of her three shots on goal. With Samford leading 1-0, the freshma pushed the lead to two with a goal in the 29th minute. She netted her second of the game in the 59th minute. The native of Cape Coral, Florida, capped off the hat trick in the 86th minute, capitalizing off of a deflection. At Auburn, she scored the first goal of the game to put the Bulldogs out in front just six minutes into the contest. Yount, a forward, assisted on Kyla Reynolds’ goal in the 90th minute that tied the score at three and forced overtime. She leads the conference in points (13) and goals (six) and is second in points per game (1.62) and goals per game (0.75).

Mezzina earns her first career honor after helping Western Carolina to a 2-0 week. The Catamounts downed High Point, 2-1, on Sept. 12 and Radford, 1-0, on Sept. 15. The freshman goalkeeper started in both contests, playing all 90 minutes in each. She allowed one goal on a penalty kick against High Point  but tallied six saves on nine shots faced. The native of Brampton, Ontario, Canada, earned a shutout against the Highlanders, Radford’s first game held scoreless all season, and added another two saves in the win.
