Wofford completes sweep of Marist Monday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Behind a complete game from pitcher Austin Higginbotham, the Wofford College baseball team defeated Marist 9-4 on Monday night Russell C. King Field. The Terriers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to break open a tie game and earn the series sweep.  
Wofford improves to 10-6 on the season, while Marist is 1-10. The Terriers had 15 hits in the game, led by McClain Bradley and Max McDougald with three each. Brett Rodriguez added three RBIs. Matt Iantosca led the Red Foxes with two hits and an RBI.  
The Red Foxes were retired in order in the top of the first and Mack Nathanson had a single in the bottom of the first inning. Marist led off the second with a bunt single and the runner moved to second on a wild pitch. A single gave the Red Foxes runners on the corners and an RBI ground out made it 1-0 in the middle of the second.
Andrew Orzel and Max McDougald singled to lead off the bottom of the second. With one out a walk to Ty Reginelli loaded the bases and a two out single by Brett Rodriguez drove in two runs for a 2-1 advantage. McClain Bradley walked to load the bases again, but a strikeout left the runners stranded. Back-to-back doubles with one out in the top of the third tied the game at 2-2. A single to left center added a run for a 3-2 lead. Cody Miller hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third to tie the game at three. It was his third home run of the season and 18th of his career. Max McDougald added a double with one out and Ty Reginelli walked with two outs to put runners on the corners. Reginelli stole second and McDougald took home on the play for a 4-3 lead.
Marist was retired in order in the top of the fourth inning. McClain Bradley doubled in the bottom of the fourth with one out, but was caught stealing third and a strikeout ended the inning. The Red Foxes singled to start the fifth inning however the runner was stranded at third to end the top half. Cody Miller singled to begin the bottom of the fifth. A double play and fly ball ended the inning for the Terriers.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, Matt Iantosca cleared the fence in left to tie the contest at four. Marist left two runners on base to end the top half. Ty Reginelli walked with one out and then Alex Malsch moved him to third on a hit-and-run. A single by Brett Rodriguez scored Reginelli and an RBI single by McClain Bradley made it a 6-4 game. A ground out by Mack Nathanson plated a run for a 7-4 lead at the end of six innings. The Red Foxes had a lead-off single in the top of the seventh, but a double play and fly ball ended the half.
In the bottom of the seventh with one out, Max McDougald and Colin Davis singled. With two outs, a single by Alex Malsch plated a run to make it an 8-4 advantage. Marist was retired in order in the top of the eighth. McClain Bradley singled and Mack Nathanson walked to open the bottom of the eighth. After a sacrifice bunt, a fielder's choice had Bradley out at home for the second out. A wild pitch scored a run to make it 9-4 after eight complete innings. The Red Foxes had one runner reach base in the top of the ninth on a walk. A diving catch against the fence by center fielder Colin Davis ended the game.
Wofford pitcher Austin Higginbotham (2-1) threw his fourth career complete game. In nine innings he allowed four runs on ten hits, while striking out seven and issuing one walk.
Conor McNamara (0-2) started for Marist and allowed six runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings with four strikeouts. Mike Coss worked 2.2 innings with three runs allowed on six hits, along with three strikeouts.
The Terriers will host USC Upstate on Wednesday prior to a weekend series against Siena.
