SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina catcher Spencer Holcomb and Samford left-hander have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games May 7-13. The selections are made by the league office. Holcomb was also named on of Collegiate Baseball’s National Players of the Week on Monday.

Holcomb tore the cover off the ball this past week, batting .556 with 10 hits, four home runs and six RBIs. The senior got off to a hot start against nationally ranked Clemson on Wednesday, going 4-for-5 from the plate including a home run, a double and four RBIs as the Catamounts nearly knocked off the fifth-ranked Tigers, falling 10-8. In Friday’s 10-9 victory at Samford, the Pfafftown, North Carolina, native recorded two hits, scored two runs, drove in two runs and homered once. In game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, Holcomb produced another pair of hits, including a solo home run as Western Carolina fell 5-1. In the series finale, the righty totaled two hits, two RBIs and one run scored, homering for his fourth consecutive game and propelling himself to player of the week honors for the first time in his career. Holcomb has now reached base in 22 straight games and is riding a career-long 10-game hit streak. Defensively, Holcomb is tied for first in the league with 21 runners caught stealing in 2018.

Strickland claimed pitcher of the week honors for the fourth time this season after throwing nine innings of four-hit ball in a complete-game win over Western Carolina on Saturday. In game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, the freshman struck out nine batters while walking just one as the Bulldogs were victorious 5-1. The lone run came off a solo shot from SoCon Player of the Week Spencer Holcomb. The left-hander ranks in the top three in the SoCon in wins (seven) and earned run average (2.05) and is holding opposing batters to a league-leading .173 opposing batting average.

Western Carolina, which is finished with conference play, travels to Eastern Kentucky for a matchup with the Colonels at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Samford returns to the diamond on Thursday, hosting VMI at 7 p.m. EST.
