JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Former ETSU forward Charlie Machell took his talents to the next level Friday, July 14, signing a one-year contract with Thisted FC of the Danish First Division.
Machell spent one season with the Bucs after transferring from Wingate University and helped propel ETSU to its first at-large appearance in the NCAA tournament in 2016. Machell was also instrumental in the Bucs’ 12-5-3 record, including a 1-0 victory over then-No. 1 North Carolina.
“We’re excited for Charlie,” said ETSU men’s soccer head coach Bo Oshoniyi. “He’s persevered through some ups and downs in trying to be a pro, and the fact that he got this opportunity is awesome for him, his family and it’s great for our program.”
Machell joins Thisted FC during its preseason, as the Danish First Division regular season begins July 30. This is Thisted FC’s first year in the Danish First Division, the top league in Denmark.
“(Danish First Division) is one of the top leagues in the world,” Oshoniyi said. “I think it’s tremendous for him to be able to get a contract in that league. I think he will fit right in to the toughness of that league.”
Machell started in 18 matches for ETSU and finished the 2016 season with three assists. He previously won the 2014 South Atlantic Conference player of the year award and was an NSCAA third-team All-American selection.
