SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer men’s soccer player Leo Toledo Jr. has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Nov. 6-12. The selection is made by the league office.
Toledo played a key role in Mercer’s two wins last week against Wofford and Furman in the SoCon Men’s Soccer Championship. He provided an assists in the 3-0 win over Wofford on No. 8 in the quarterfinals to set up a showdown with No. 1 seed Furman on Nov. 10. The two sides ended regulation and the first overtime period tied at two goals each before the Gillsville, Georgia, native came through with the deciding goal. After a Furman giveaway, Mercer’s Dawson Gideon dribbled around a pair of defenders and slipped a pass to Toledo, who struck a shot from outside of the box to beat the diving goalkeeper.
Toledo is a marketing major and currently holds a 3.672 grade point average.
The No. 4 seeded Bears return to the pitch Nov. 17 to face No. 2 seed UNC Greensboro in the SoCon Men’s Soccer Championship final at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina, at 6 p.m.
Also nominated for SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week: Kaela Massey (ETSU volleyball), Hamp Sisson (Furman football), Abbey Cornelius (Chattanooga women’s basketball) and MaKenzie White (Western Carolina volleyball).
