GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes named midfielder and former Furman University standout Shea Salinas as the club's Humanitarian of the Year, it was announced prior to last week's match with D.C. United.
Salinas, who earned 2007 NSCAA All-America honors as a Paladin before being drafted as the 15th overall pick by the Earthquakes in January of 2008, has been an extremely active member of the greater San Jose community. The Grapevine, Texas, native has made countless appearances at schools, churches and youth centers all around the Bay Area. Salinas has mentored many children in the community, teaching them about the importance of living a healthy, active lifestyle and working hard both in the classroom and in their communities. He has worked on Earthquakes community projects such as; Amway Kicks for Kids, Get Earthquakes Fit and many other endeavors.
Salinas has tallied four assists while appearing in 21 matches and making 11 starts for the Earthquakes this season. The speedy winger netted five goals and added nine assists as a senior at Furman in 2007 as he guided the Paladins to a 19-4-0 record, SoCon regular season title, SoCon Tournament championship and second round NCAA Tournament appearance. Salinas garnered NSCAA All-South Region honors, as well as, NSCAA Scholar All-American honors.
