SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG junior guard Francis Alonso was named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests from Nov. 28 to Dec. 4 after averaging 26 points per game in a pair of road contests. The award is selected by the league office.
The Spartans played a pair of thrilling, one-possession games on the week, and Alonso was right in the middle of the action in both games. The Malaga, Spain, native opened his week with 16 points in a 74-72 loss at Presbyterian, which hit a buzzer-beater to steal the win after coming back from a 15-point deficit. Alonso was 3-for-7 from 3-point range and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line on the night.
Four days later, Alonso practically willed UNCG to a three-overtime win at Liberty, scoring a career-high 36 points in the 76-75 victory. Alonso hit another seven 3-pointers in the contest, including the game-tying bucket with five seconds left in regulation, another game-tying 3 with six seconds left in the second overtime, and then the game-winning triple with just 2.4 seconds left in the third OT.
Alonso was the only Spartan starter in double figures and the only player in the game to surpass the 20-point plateau. The contest marked the third time this season that Alonso has scored at least 30 points.
Other nominees: Bo Hodges (ETSU), Matt Rafferty (Furman), Jordan Strawberry (Mercer), Demetrius Denzel-Dyson (Samford), Nat Dixon (Chattanooga), Mike Amius (Western Carolina) and Fletcher Magee (Wofford).
