MACON, Ga. – Demetre Rivers, who starred for the Mercer Bears men’s basketball team the past four seasons, has been named to the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets Summer League roster. The Hornets announced over the weekend the 19-man roster for the team’s mini-camp beginning July 2 in advance of the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2018 in Las Vegas.
The four-day mini-camp will take place at the Novant Health Training Center inside the Spectrum Center in Charlotte from Monday, July 2, through Thursday, July 5.
Rivers, a 6-8, 180-pound product of Ladson, South Carolina, was a three-year starter for coach Bob Hoffman’s squad and earned his bachelor’s degree from Mercer this past May. Rivers scored 1,065 career points, which ranks 33rd in school history. His 86.3 percent career free-throw percentage is tied for the best in the program’s record books. A versatile player that can score from outside and inside, Rivers sank 126 career 3-pointers. He recorded single-game highs of 30 points and nine rebounds. This past season, Rivers averaged 10.9 points, third-best on the team, and led the Bears with an 89.8 percent mark from the free-throw stripe. Rivers had worked out for the Hornets last month in Charlotte.
Following the mini-camp in Charlotte, the Hornets will open their MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2018 schedule on Friday, July 6, against the Oklahoma City Thunder at 5:30 p.m. ET (ESPNU). Charlotte will play the Miami Heat on Sunday, July 8, at 5 p.m. ET (NBA TV) and the Boston Celtics on Monday, July 9, at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2) before starting tournament play. All Summer League games will be broadcast on either the ESPN family of networks or NBA TV.
