SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman senior forward Matt Rafferty has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests Dec. 31 to Jan. 7. The award is selected by the league office.
Rafferty notched a career high in scoring, posted a pair of double-doubles to run his season total to eight, and surpassed the 1,000-point benchmark for his career in leading the Paladins to wins over Mercer and The Citadel. For the week, he averaged 23.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game.
In Furman’s 71-58 win over the Bears on Thursday, Rafferty scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, shooting 6-for-9 from the floor and going 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. With his second bucket of the evening, he became the 44th member of the Paladins’ 1,000-point club.
Two days later, the Hinsdale, Illinois, native went off for a career-high 28 points and added 12 boards to lead Furman to a 101-85 win over the Bulldogs. Rafferty was 11-for-15 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, adding three steals for the second straight game.
With the victories, Furman has now won 12 straight at home and 20 of its last 22 regular-season games overall. The Paladins (14-2, 3-1 SoCon) are receiving votes in this week’s USA Today Coaches Top 25.
Furman embarks on a three-game road swing Thursday at VMI (6-9, 0-3). That contest tips at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
Other nominees: Alex Reed (The Citadel), Tray Boyd III (ETSU), Djordje Dimitrijevic (Mercer), Francis Alonso (UNCG), Ramon Vila (Chattanooga), Carlos Dotson (Western Carolina) and Fletcher Magee (Wofford).
