SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina junior forward Onno Steger has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests Jan. 29 to Feb. 4. The award is selected by the league office.
Steger had a career week in leading the Catamounts to a road split with Chattanooga and Samford. The Upper Arlington, Ohio, native averaged 25.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game and shot 50 percent from 3-point range on the week.
In Western Carolina’s 105-96 win at Chattanooga on Thursday, which snapped the Mocs’ eight-game winning streak, Steger scored a career-high 30 points, pulled down eight rebounds and had three assists. Steger was 4-for-8 from 3-point range and 14-for-15 from the free-throw line as the Catamounts scored their most points against a Division I opponent in a regulation game since 1996.
Two days later, Steger recorded his first career double-double in a 92-81 loss at Samford, scoring 21 points to go with 11 rebounds, bettering his previous career high by two boards. Steger had four assists and was 5-for-10 from 3-point range on the day.
Western Carolina (6-18, 3-8 SoCon) hosts Furman (18-5, 7-4) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in a contest that can be seen live on ESPN3 before heading to league-leading Wofford (19-4, 11-0) on Saturday for a 7 p.m. tip on ESPN+.
