Three Student-Athletes Honored for Excellence in Competition
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Southern Conference announced its December athletes of the month today, highlighting excellence among student-athletes during the month. The athletes of the month are nominated by each member institution and selected by the conference office.
Antwaine Wiggins, College of Charleston, Sr., F
Wiggins led College of Charleston to a 5-2 record in the month of December including a 71-65 home victory over Tennessee on Dec. 14 and a perfect 2-0 start to Southern Conference play for the fourth-straight season. He averaged a team-and conference-leading 18.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game against The Citadel, North Division favorite Chattanooga, Tennessee, Charleston Southern, No. 4-ranked Louisville, Coastal Carolina and George Mason combined - three of which were NCAA Tournament teams a year ago. Wiggins tied a career-high with 24 points against his home state Vols, including 15 in the second half of play. It was one of three 20-point outings in the month of December as he held a career-best seven-game double-digit scoring streak. Wiggins also reached a milestone of his own becoming the 29th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points with his jumper at the 8:32 minute mark of the first half at Louisville on Dec. 20.

Anna Freeman, Appalachian State, Jr. F
Forward Anna Freeman finished the month of December scoring in the double-figures in six games, as well as surpassing the 1,000 career points mark with her 18-point game against Longwood on Dec. 31. Freeman scored 25 points against Georgia Southern and 24 at UNC Asheville. She averaged 18.7 points per game for the Mountaineers. The junior also recorded at least four steals in four games and tallied at least two blocks in each game.

Austin Trotman, Appalachian State, Sr., 184
Trotman went 8-1 in December to close out 2011, finishing the year at 16-1. Trotman opened the month with a 9-4 decision at the team's Virginia Tech dual to tally his 100th career victory. In the team's SoCon opener against Gardner-Webb, he earned a pin in 2:17, and the senior earned a 10-5 win in his final dual of the month at Ohio. At the Reno Tournament of Champions, Trotman earned a 5-0 shutout of No. 17 Matt Ryan of West Virginia before suffering his only loss of the month to Wyoming's No. 3 Joe LeBlanc. He concluded the day with a third-place showing in Reno. After starting the season ranked No. 14, Trotman climbed to No. 10 in December's final InterMat Wrestling rankings.
