SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina guard Mason Faulkner was named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for all contests from Nov. 12-18 after averaging 17.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 8.5 assists per game in in two contests. The award is selected by the league office.
Faulkner turned in the first triple-double in the Catamounts’ Division I history in a 90-64 win over North Carolina A&T on Nov. 12, scoring 13 points, pulling down 10 rebounds and dishing off 10 assists. The redshirt junior from Glasgow, Kentucky, was 5-for-7 from the floor (.714) on the evening and added three steals as Western Carolina posted its largest margin of victory over a DI opponent since topping Binghamton 77-44 on Nov. 24, 2009.
Faulkner followed up his historic evening with a game-high 21 points in Western Carolina’s 79-74 loss at Florida State on Friday. In a game the Catamounts led by 17 at one point, Faulkner was 6-for-15 from the floor and 7-for-7 from the free-throw line, adding a game-high seven assists and a steal.
Western Carolina (2-2) returns to Florida for a pair of games this week, facing Jacksonville on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Stetson on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both contests will air live on ESPN+.
