MACON, Ga. – Mercer women's basketball head coach Susie Gardner is one of eight individuals who will be inducted into the Macon Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday night, the organization announced.
Gardner will be inducted alongside Donnie Allen, Gerald Fitch, George Foster, Edith Gerhardt, Michael Mimbs, John Rocker and Jimmy Turner as the Macon Sports Hall of Fame's 2019 class. A presentation of the 2019 inductees will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the lobby of the Macon Centreplex. The induction ceremony and a dinner will be held immediately following downstairs at 6:30 p.m. in the Monument Room.
"With the exception of growing up in Mount Juliet, Tenn., I've lived in Macon longer than any other spot in my coaching journey," Gardner said. "I'm so thankful to be recognized for what our student-athletes and coaches have done and for what our administrators have allowed us to do at Mercer.
"Looking at the names that have been inducted before me, I'm honored to see so many people that I respect and can call friends during the time I've been in Macon. This is truly a special honor to receive."
Gardner recently completed her ninth season as Mercer's head coach and is the program's all-time winningest with 169 victories dating back to the 2010-11 campaign. She has transformed Mercer into one of the top mid-major programs in the NCAA by winning four consecutive Southern Conference regular season titles and two straight SoCon tournament titles. The Bears have won 20-plus games in six of the last seven years and have participated in six postseason tournaments – including two NCAA Tournament appearances (2018, 2019) – in Gardner's nine seasons.
Gardner was named the Atlanta Tipoff Club's 2019 Georgia College Women's Coach of the Year in March and has won the SoCon's Coach of the Year honor in three of the last four seasons. She has over 300 Division I wins on her resume.
The Macon Sports Hall of Fame got its beginning as the Macon Athletic Hall of Fame in 1976 as a Bicentennial Project of the Bibb County Jaycees. Jaycee member Billy Hester chaired the project.
