SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina’s Jewel Smalls has been named the Southern Conference women’s basketball player of the week presented by GEICO for games played Nov. 26 to Dec. 2. The award is selected by the league office.
In the Catamounts’ lone contest, an 88-62 road loss to Gardner-Webb, the sophomore netted a game-high 32 points, single-handily scoring more than half of Western Carolina’s points. The native of Roswell, Georgia, also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to record her seventh double-double of the season, tied for most in Division I. Smalls, who has scored in double figures in eight of nine games, finished 10-for 18 from the floor (55.6 percent) and 6-for-10 from 3-point range (60 percent) and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. The six made 3s were a career-high. Smalls, a 5-7 guard, leads the NCAA in rebounding with 105.
Smalls’ honor marks the first time Western Carolina has won two weekly awards in a season since 2016-17 and the first time the same Catamount has won two weekly awards in a season since Ashley Pellom in 2007-08.
Smalls is third in the league in scoring, averaging 15.7 points per game, and is the only player averaging double-digit rebounds (11.7).
Western Carolina (1-8) hosts Charleston Southern on Wednesday, Dec. 4, and welcomes Cleveland State to the Ramsey Center on Friday, Dec. 6.
Also nominated: E’Lease Stafford (ETSU), Tierra Hodges (Furman), Nadine Soliman (UNCG), Natalie Armstrong (Samford) and Da’Ja Green (Wofford).
