SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its men’s soccer players of the week Tuesday for games played Sept. 10-16. Furman forward Emery May and defender Jack Shiels were honored as the league’s offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively.
Furman extended its winning streak to four games and its unbeaten streak to five with a pair of wins over UNC Asheville and Davidson.
May, a preseason all-conference selection, scored a pair of goals and added an assist in the two Paladin wins last week. On Wednesday, he provided the assist on the opening goal and netted the match-winner with just 11 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Furman to a 2-1 win over UNC Asheville. On Saturday night, the senior opened the scoring in the first half of a 3-2 win over Davidson.
Shiels, also a preseason all-conference selection, anchored the back line to help lead Furman to an undefeated week at home. The senior scored his first goal of the season with a header off a Rocky Guerra corner kick to help propel the Paladins to the 3-2 victory over Davidson on Saturday.
Furman will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 18, when it travels travel to Columbia, South Carolina, to face the University of South Carolina at 7 p.m. Furman’s Doug Allison will make a return to his alma mater, where he was a member of the men’s soccer team and spent four years as an assistant coach under current Gamecock boss Mark Berson.
Also nominated for offensive player of the week: Niccolo Dagnoni (Belmont), Hauk Andreas Fossen (ETSU) and Brandon Hornung (VMI).
