SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its men’s soccer players of the week Tuesday for games played Oct. 29 - Nov. 4. UNC Greensboro midfielder Albert Pedra and goalkeeper Brendan Pulley were honored as the league’s offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively.
UNCG clinched a share of the Southern Conference regular-season title on Oct. 29 when it took down Mercer 2-0 and finished the regular season with a 3-1 nonconference victory over Old Dominion on Nov. 2.
Pedra assisted on Micah Albert’s opener against Mercer with a threaded pass through the Bears’ defense that set up Albert for the game-winning goal. The Vinaros, Spain, native brought the Spartans back into the match with Old Dominion after the Monarchs took the lead early in the second half. Pedra leveled the score in the 80th minute before bagging a brace just over a minute later to put the Spartans in front. He completed his hat trick in the 83rd minute, slotting his shot into the back of the net after going one-on-one with the Old Dominion goalkeeper. Pedra’s hat trick took just over three minutes to complete, which is the fifth-fastest in Division I history.
The weekly award is Pedra’s first of his career.
Pulley allowed just one goal in 180 minutes between the posts in a pair of wins. The freshman from Holly Springs, North Carolina, opened the week with a shutout of Mercer while tallying four saves, including a diving stop in the closing minutes to secure the clean sheet. Pulley was strong once again versus Old Dominion as he made four saves, shutting down the Monarchs following their lone goal of the match. The Spartans netminder leads the conference with a 0.90 goals-against average and ranks second with a .737 save percentage.
The weekly award is the second of Pulley’s career.
UNCG will return to the pitch on Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. for a SoCon Men’s Soccer Championship semifinal when it hosts the winner of No. 3 ETSU’s matchup with the winner of No. 6 Belmont and No. 7 VMI.
