SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its volleyball players of the week Monday for games played Sept. 9-15. Samford right side hitter Kelsi Hobbs was named the Offensive Player of the Week, Western Carolina’s Meagan Sanchez was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Samford’s Corinne Meglic was tabbed the Setter of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
Hobbs averaged 4.00 kills per set and hit .279 as the Bulldogs downed Kennesaw State and South Alabama over the weekend. The senior had double-doubles in each contest, beginning with an 18-kill, 12-dig performance in the 3-1 win over the Owls on Sept. 13. Her 18 kills led all players as she hit .265 and added two aces in the match. The next day, she again tallied 18 kills, tying for the match high. She finished with 10 digs to earn her second straight double-double and help Samford improve to 6-2 on the season.
Western Carolina’s Sanchez averaged 6.33 digs per set, finishing with at least 22 digs in each of the three matches. In a four-set loss at Appalachian State on Sept. 12, the senior led the Catamounts with 22 digs. The next day, the Bristow, Virginia, native led all players with 23 digs in a 3-1 loss to Iowa State. Later that afternoon, she turned in her best performance of the week, notching 31 digs, a match high a two shy of her career high, in a four-set loss to NC State.
Meglic, a redshirt sophomore, helped the Bulldogs to a 2-0 weekend as Samford downed Kennesaw State and South Alabama. The native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, had 52 assists in each of the wins. In the five-set victory at Kennesaw State, she added eight blocks to contribute defensively. She had three kills, three digs and four blocks in the 3-1 win against the Jaguars.
Hobbs, a preseason all-conference selection, nabs her first career weekly award, while Sanchez collects her third career honor and second of the season and Meglic picks up her second straight weekly award.
This weekend, Samford concludes nonconference play by competing in the Western Kentucky Invitational in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The Bulldogs host Chattanooga on Sept. 25 to begin Southern Conference play.
