SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week Monday for all games played Sept. 30. Samford quarterback Devlin Hodges was named the Offensive Player of the Week, Western Carolina linebacker Tahjai Watt was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Furman wide receiver/return specialist Logan McCarter was voted the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Devlin Hodges, Samford, R-Jr., QB, Kimberly, Ala.
Samford quarterback Devlin Hodges went 21-for-26 for 323 yards and three touchdowns through the air as the Bulldogs knocked off 11th-ranked The Citadel on Saturday, 35-14. The reigning SoCon Offensive Player of the Year, Hodges also ran for a score to help Samford break a two-game skid and jump three spots to No. 20 nationally. The redshirt junior from Kimberly, Alabama, completed three passes of at least 50 yards in the game, including a 70-yard touchdown to Yassar El-Amin and a 63-yard scoring strike to TaDarryl Marshall. With his 16th career 300-yard passing game, Hodges moved up five spots to fourth in league history with 7,942 career passing yards.

Other nominees: Austin Herink (ETSU), P.J. Blazejowski (Furman), Kaelan Riley (Mercer), Bingo Morton (Chattanooga), Corey Holloway (Western Carolina) and Blake Morgan (Wofford).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tahjai Watt, Western Carolina, R-Sr., LB, Charlotte, N.C.
Western Carolina outside linebacker Tahjai Watt recorded five tackles and forced a fumble in the Catamounts’ 45-7 win at Chattanooga on Saturday. The redshirt senior from Charlotte, North Carolina, had two sacks amongst his five stops, totaling 18 yards. With Western Carolina leading 10-0 in the second quarter, Watt sacked UTC quarterback Nick Tiano, forcing a fumble that the Catamounts pounced on in the end zone for the first of two sack-fumble scores on the afternoon. Watt was part of a defense that matched its season total with seven sacks in the game and held the Mocs to just 49 rushing yards on the day.

Other nominees: Tremond Ferrell (ETSU), Stephen Houzah (Mercer), Ahmad Gooden (Samford), Jerrell Lawson (Chattanooga) and Terrance Morris (Wofford).

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Logan McCarter, Furman, R-Sr., WR/RS, Sevierville, Tenn.
Furman wide receiver Logan McCarter stepped in for injured return specialist Thomas Gordon and returned an onside kick 47 yards for a touchdown in the Paladins’ 56-35 win over ETSU. The play came after the Bucs had pulled to within two scores and put the game out of reach. McCarter, a redshirt senior from Sevierville, Tennessee, also had a huge day receiving, as he caught seven passes for 178 yards and a touchdown. His 178 yards were the sixth-highest in a game in Furman history.
