LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a national search, Bellarmine University announced Monday that Andrew Whitley will become the next head coach of the Bellarmine men’s lacrosse team.

“We are pleased to have Andrew Whitley join the Bellarmine community as our next lacrosse coach,” said Bellarmine President Dr. Susan Donovan. “He has distinguished himself in the lacrosse profession, and likewise, distinguished himself in our search process. I look forward to Coach Whitley and Knights competing at a national level in the very near future.”

Whitley comes to Bellarmine after serving on the coaching staff of the Fairfield University lacrosse team for the past 10 seasons. He began as a volunteer assistant for the Stags in 2009 before being promoted to a full-time role in 2013 and was elevated to associate head coach in 2015. Whitley worked in virtually every phase of the program, providing individual instruction on offense, defense and specialty areas while also coordinating Fairfield’s recruiting and day-to-day operations.

“Andy’s experience, professionalism and zeal for college lacrosse make him an outstanding fit for Bellarmine,” said Bellarmine Director of Athletics Scott Wiegandt. “He is 100 percent dedicated to the student-athlete and has proven himself as an outstanding teacher.”

“I want to thank President Donovan, Senior Vice President (Sean) Ryan, and Director of Athletics Wiegandt for entrusting me with stewardship of the men’s lacrosse program during this exciting time in Bellarmine University history,” Whitley said. “With the elevation of the entire athletic department to Division I status, the men’s lacrosse program is poised take a leadership role in advancing the university vision now and into the future. I am both humbled and fortunate to be a part of what lies ahead for Bellarmine lacrosse and Bellarmine Athletics as a whole.”

During Whitley’s tenure with Fairfield, the Stags flourished in lacrosse, winning three conference titles, producing a school-record 12 wins in two different seasons, and ascending to a national ranking of No. 11 in 2014. In addition, six Fairfield players earned All-America status and 16 players were named to the USILA North/South game while Whitley was with the Fairfield program.

Whitley’s other coaching experience includes a three-year stint at Yale along with serving the Hopkins School in New Haven, Connecticut, and Wesleyan University. He also serves an assistant coach for the Puerto Rico Lacrosse National Team.

As college player, Whitley competed at Alfred University before transferring to Franklin & Marshall, where he was a two-time All-Centennial Conference goalie and won the prestigious Diplomat Award for character and leadership.

Prior to coaching on a full-time basis, Whitley pursued a successful business career serving Athletes, Inc., as vice president for U.S. operations before becoming chief executive officer of Ankeny Homes, LLC in Wilton, Connecticut.

Whitley plans to retain Bellarmine full-time assistant lacrosse coaches Kyle Bernlohr and Steve Soriano.

Bellarmine lacrosse competes in the Southern Conference at the NCAA Division I level. In recent news, 26 players were named to the SoCon Honor Roll, which recognizes team members who have achieved a 3.0 grade point average during the academic year. The university also recently announced that it will join the ASUN Conference for the 2020-21 season, elevating its remaining 21 varsity sports to the NCAA DI level. The lacrosse team will remain in the Southern Conference.
