SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Bellarmine’s Brian Wall and Kevin Fahey have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition from Feb. 27 to March 5. The awards are selected by the league office.
The Knights went 1-1 on the week, falling to Detroit Mercy 11-5 on Friday before downing No. 18/19 Marquette on Sunday, 7-6 in double overtime.
Wall scored five goals and added an assist on the week. Against Detroit Mercy, the senior midfielder from Penfield, New York, scored three of Bellarmine’s five goals, tallying once in the third quarter and twice in the fourth. Wall also came up big for the Knights against Marquette, scoring with about four minutes left in the second quarter to draw BU within two goals at 4-2 and then assisting on Landon Trout’s fourth-quarter goal, which tied the contest at 5-5. After a scoreless first overtime period, Wall secured Bellarmine’s first win over a ranked opponent since 2015 when he scored an unassisted goal with 2:16 left in the second extra frame.
Fahey, a preseason All-SoCon selection in the defense, averaged four ground balls in the two contests, notching three with a caused turnover against the Titans before collecting five ground balls against the Golden Eagles. The senior from Coronado, California, also held Marquette’s leading scorer to just an assist on the day and led a defense that allowed Bellarmine’s fewest goals since a 7-5 win over High Point on April 8 of last season.
Bellarmine (2-4) now enjoys nearly two weeks off before opening SoCon play at High Point (0-6) on March 17 at 2 p.m. Eastern at the Panthers’ Vert Stadium.
Other offensive nominees: Matthew Schwartz (Air Force), McLean Chicquen (Jacksonville), Scott Baird (Mercer).
Other defensive nominees: Trent Harper (Air Force).
