SPARTANBURG, S.C. – High Point faceoff specialist Davis Sampere and Richmond goalkeeper Blake Goodman have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition from April 3-9. The awards are selected by the league office.
Sampere went 16-for-23 from the faceoff X in the Panthers’ 15-7 win over league-leading Furman on Saturday, good for a .696 win percentage. The Raleigh, North Carolina, native also scored two goals and assisted on another as High Point knocked the Paladins from the ranks of league unbeaten and joined them atop the standings at 3-1 in SoCon play. Sampere’s two goals and three points were career highs, while his 16 faceoff wins were one shy of his career benchmark. The sophomore contributed in all facets of the game, rounding out his impressive stat line with a career-high 12 ground balls, one shy of the school record.
Goodman earned his second weekly honor by allowing just six goals and making nine saves in the Spiders’ 8-6 win over Bellarmine, which propelled Richmond into a tie atop the league standings at 3-1 in SoCon play. The sophomore from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, faced 33 shots on the afternoon and posted a .600 save percentage as the Spiders improved to 21-3 in SoCon play since the league added the sport in 2015. Goodman also collected two ground balls.
High Point (3-7, 3-1 SoCon) hosts VMI (2-7, 0-4) on Friday at 7 p.m. Eastern, while Richmond (6-5, 3-1) welcomes Jacksonville (5-5, 3-1) in a battle of SoCon leaders on Saturday at noon.
Other offensive nominees: Trey Lervick (Air Force), Hunter Forbes (Jacksonville), Matt Quinn (Mercer) and Teddy Hatfield (Richmond).
Other defensive nominees: Matthew Schwartz (Air Force), Tim Troutner Jr. (High Point), Dixon Smith (Jacksonville) and Matt Hughes (Mercer).
