RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men’s lacrosse program returns to the NCAA tournament for the second straight year and third time in program history. The Spiders learned their postseason fate Sunday evening as the selections for the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship took place on ESPNU, and the Spiders will be travelling to Durham, North Carolina, for a meeting against No. 2 national seed Duke.
The Southern Conference champion Spiders will match up with Blue Devils on Sunday at 5 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU. Richmond earned the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament courtesy of a 15-7 victory over No. 11 High Point in the SoCon Championship game Saturday afternoon.
Richmond is officially one of 17 teams with the opportunity to compete for a national championship when the tournament gets underway on Wednesday, May 8, with the play-in game. The first round is set to take place May 11-12 and the quarterfinals May 18-19. The national semifinals will be held May 25 and the national championship will be May 27 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
This will mark the second meeting of the year between Richmond and Duke. The Spiders faced off against the Blue Devils in Robins Stadium, dropping a hard-fought 11-7 contest to then sixth-ranked Duke in March as the Spiders were within one goal in the fourth quarter before the Blue Devils scored the final three goals of the game.
Sunday’s game marks the third NCAA tournament appearance in the program’s six-year history. Richmond advanced to the NCAA tournament in the first year of the program in 2014, playing in the play-in game at Air Force. Last year, the Spiders also travelled to the No. 2 national seed, falling at Albany by an 18-9 margin.
