SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Jacksonville attack Brendan McKenna and Air Force defenseman Brandon Jones have been named the Southern Conference men’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition April 9-15. The awards are selected by the league office.

JU’s McKenna matched SoCon and program records with seven assists in the Dolphins’ 19-9 road win over VMI on Saturday. The freshman from Clarksville, Maryland, also scored twice for a nine-point day, which ties for second in a game in both SoCon and Jacksonville history. McKenna had a hand in five goals in the third quarter alone, scoring his second of the day and assisting on four others as JU outscored VMI 8-2 in the frame to blow open what had been a two-goal game at the half. Since moving into the starting lineup four games ago, McKenna has scored 13 of his 15 points on the season, including five of his six goals on the year.

Jacksonville (4-8, 3-2 SoCon) hosts Furman (3-9, 1-4) at noon on Saturday in its final home contest of the season.

Air Force’s Jones notched five ground balls and caused a game-high three turnovers as the Falcons topped Richmond 14-7 to hand the Spiders their first league loss of the year and just the fourth in program history in the SoCon regular season. Jones, tasked with marking Richmond’s leading scorers, helped the Falcons hold UR to just seven goals, matching its low for the season. The senior from Upper Arlington, Ohio, capped the win with the final Air Force goal of the day, scoring on a 19-yard long-pole shot early in the fourth quarter. Jones leads the Falcons in caused turnovers (25) and ground balls (65) this season.

Air Force (8-4, 4-1), which is now receiving votes in all three major national polls, visit VMI (4-6, 0-5) at noon Saturday.

Other offensive nominees: Matthew Schwartz (Air Force), Stephen Votto (Bellarmine), Jarrett Birch (Furman), Asher Nolting (High Point) and Michael Quinn (Mercer).

Other defensive nominees: Jordan Dondoyano (Bellarmine), Tim Troutner Jr. (High Point), Zack Deaken (Jacksonville) and Ashton Wood (Mercer).
